TORONTO BIKING, A LIFESTYLE

TORONTO BIKING, A LIFESTYLE*
There are few cities in the world like Toronto, which is home to a complete and extensive infrastructure to bike. A network that combines lines, roads, parking spaces, as well as a large number of programs and services that revolve around promoting cycling in the city. Biking attracts people who are interested in a lifestyle that promotes a sustainable culture and who want to spend their time and money efficiently. It’s environment friendly and overall a great way to introduce a healthy habit into your life.
Whatever the motive, take full advantage of the summer and get riding on your two wheels. Before you go, keep the following advice in mind:
• Share the road with traffic. In Toronto your bike is like a car, so you have to be a lot smarter because you are completely exposed. Be sure to make yourself visible, obey traffic rules, avoid making unexpected moves and become familiar with the rules for cyclists. You will find free copies of the Toronto Cyclists Handbook in any library.
• Avoid theft. Although Toronto is known for being a very safe city, bike theft is quite common, so a good U-lock is essential. Cable locks are also handy if you want to secure two bikes. You will find many unalterable posts to lock your bike to, around the city. Always use your lock.

• Be careful of streetcar rails. Streetcar rails are threatening. Unfortunately daily accidents occur where cyclists tires become entangled in the lines. In order to avoid this, cross the lines slowly at a 90 degree angle and at intersections, get off the bike and use the crosswalk.

• Take care of your bike. In addition to saving money on repairs and maintenance, it is always good to know how to fix your bike at any time. Before leaving home always check wheel alignment and tire pressure, oil the chain and clean it occasionally. Proper maintenance is vital to avoid replacing parts. Now you’re ready! Get your bike, get out and enjoy the city on two wheels.

VOLUNTEERING : WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT IN CANADA

VOLUNTEERING : WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT IN CANADA?
As newcomers, the word volunteer can sound like a new and a strange notion, but the reality is that volunteering is an important part of Canadian society. Without volunteers, many organizations, events, festivals and social causes simply would not be possible.

Many believe in voluntary altruism, but the truth is that it provides a personal benefit beyond feeling good about yourself; it helps build better communities, something that Canada and its people are deeply proud of. Whether you are new to Canada or just want to make volunteering part of your life, there are many benefits you can receive:

  • You gain experience. As a newcomer you must face the barrier of not having Canadian experience and volunteering is an excellent way to cross that barrier, also you potentially get the referrals you need when searching for your first job.
  • You connect with others. Volunteering can be a great tool for creating a contact network with the community. It can be a great opportunity to meet new people, increase your social skills and expand your social circle.
